Note Best Practices

Be Professional

Remember that clients may request access to their data:

  • Stick to factual observations
  • Avoid opinions or judgments
  • Keep notes relevant to training

Be Useful

Write notes your future self will appreciate:

  • Be specific enough to be helpful
  • Include dates when relevant
  • Note follow-up actions needed

Be Consistent

Develop a habit:

  • Add notes after each session
  • Update when things change
  • Review notes before sessions

Example Notes

Good client note:

“Goals: Wants to run a half marathon in October 2024. Currently runs 5K. Has previous IT band issues - need to monitor and include preventive exercises. Prefers morning sessions. Works from home Tuesday/Thursday - more flexible those days.”

Good session note:

“22/01/24: Deadlift form drill - focused on hip hinge. Progressed to 50kg x 6, good form. Slight low back tightness after - added extra stretching. For next session: try Romanian deadlifts to reinforce pattern.”
